Once it's reached the end of its road-going life, your MINI goes on to greater things. From the outset, MINI focuses on sustainable design, with recyclable materials and easy-to-dismantle bodywork. At then end, the car is more or less filleted – because the best bits are still needed. All pollutants are separated from the vehicle and the raw materials undergo sorting and reprocessing after recycling.
After the dismantling process, the parts of the MINI body are sorted and shredded so that they can then fulfil a wide range of purposes – from energy production to smelting. And of course the chances are also good that these parts will again result in a MINI in future. But these are not all the options. Here’s an amusing suggestion of another way to recycle the MINI body.
All clear for MINI glass recycling: front and rear windscreens, as well as the windows of the scrapped MINI make are sent sheet-glass recycling plants. And since recycled glass is a prime raw material for the glass industry, it is quite possible that a former MINI windscreen may one day again become part of a new MINI. Even the transformer is fond of raising its glass in honour – and recycled glass is honoured to be with the transformer.
Recycling at MINI – there’s definitely precious metal there: the platinum contained in the catalytic converter is needed in the production of new converters.
An everlasting battery? Well, almost – the lead of the MINI battery is melted down for reuse in a lead smelter. Which means that it is also used in the manufacture of new batteries. But that’s not all: Recycled MINI batteries may even help you to get to the bottom of things.
Light alloy wheel.
They simply keep on running. Light-alloy wheels from the MINI are melted down, and the recycled aluminium can be used to produce new light-alloy wheels. Or you may find another attractive use for it – if you see what we mean.
Liquid assets that never dry up: after the MINI has been completely drained of all lubricants, the oil is refined and may well end up where it started – in the engine of your MINI. Or of course in some other spot where smooth-running is demanded – as this extract shows.
